Astronomy

I grew up in the English countryside, where skies are dark and seeing is good. In south Wales I was fortunate enough to take some astronomy classes at the University of Glamorgan. Eastern Illinois University in Charleston had an astronomy club that was open to interested members of the community and this time of year evokes fond memories of pumpkin carving with them.

Living in Peotone, Illinois for the past few years, I've done nothing astronomy–related, unless perhaps you count seeing a VERY bright flash the night a meteor became a metorite in Matteson. Chicago's awful orange glow ruined half the sky and living up three flights of stairs put me off the idea of field trips. Perhaps I was also sulking in part because my poor handle on mathematics hampers my interest in cosmology.

Now that we have moved a little South, to Bradley, I have noticed that the sky is more agreeable. Being on the ground also makes it less precarious to drag my telescope around. This morning I reassembled my tripod and set it to 41° latitude. We had a concrete slab rebuilt at the back of the house and now I'm kicking myself for not having had a telescope base included in the quote! :-) I'm not promising a blog, but I will gather together some astronomy links for this page and perhaps write a little if I get some observing done.
