While I usually write human-based interaction stories, of which I am currently working on a five book storyline, I have written two Transformers stories, one of which is very large and is not yet complete, dealing with the Transformers, Primus, and Unicron twenty years after the events in the movie. The story I am sending you no is titled "A Soldier's Story", and deals with one subject that I have yet to see be dealt with effectively, the origin of Optimus Prime. Please post this on your fanfic page, and iemail me with any comments you might have. By the way, it is written in Microsoft Word 6. I hope this will not be a problem. The Cybertronian civil war has been raging for three million years. The mislabeled Autobot Matrix of leadership is now in the possession of its third keeper, Sentinel Prime. The Decepticons, after an ageless stalemate, are now beginning to gain control of the war, and over the planet. Autobots, however bravely they fight, are falling to the might of the increasingly potent Decepticon war machine. "Come on, Blitz, hurry up!" Rollbar screamed as he left the Decepticon weapons complex they had just escaped from. His comrades, Blitz and Crunch, lagged behind as the three made their way into the oily depths of the nearby sewer. Rollbar turned to see three shapes rise from the building and begin to race toward his position. Quickly, transforming into his boxy, tank-like mode, he threw himself into the sewer pipe as missiles from the Decepticon Hunter/Killer team struck the ground. Rollbar waited until the ships passed to surface on the oily slick. Looking around, he saw the half melted bodies of his comrades, the victims of Thrust's incendiary attack. He kept deadly silent as Ravage and Sinnertwin emerged from the shadows to check the wreckage. Covered in the swill of the sewer, he was invisible to Ravage's intensive searches. The Decepticon examined the Autobot corpses, then spoke, "Come, Sinnertwin, there's better places to hunt than here." One of the last of the great Autobot city-states, Iacon stood almost unscathed amid the wastelands. Deep within the city, Perceptor and Wheeljack labored on a project they hoped would change the course of battle back to the side of the Autobots. As they worked, Sentinel Prime walked across the reflective metal floor of the science center. His large silver frame hunched over with worry. The war was not going well. Just in the last several days, he had seen several of his most trusted aides ripped to pieces by the newest and most unstable of the Decepticons' many leaders, Megatron. He had seen him only once, seen him stare straight into the eyes of an Autobot as he ripped the Cybertronian's head from its body. That one was going to be trouble. He shook the thought of Megatron from his mind and queried the research team. "How is the project coming along?" Perceptor stopped his work and addressed his leader. "We have managed to isolate the individual circuits which have been preventing successful-" Wheeljack cut him off, "We've found the problem, it'll take us a little while to solve it. We can take volunteers in a few days." "Excellent. But are you sure it's safe?" "I would like to have a lot more time to study the process, but it's as good as we can do for now." Sentinel Prime nodded his head as the door to the center opened. In strode Fortress Maximus, on of his few remaining war chiefs. "Prime- Rollbar has returned. His entire squad was wiped out inside the complex." "Is he alright?" "He's banged up a bit, but he'll be alright. What are we going to do?" "I'm open to suggestions." "You know my recommendation. We should leave Cybertron now." "Unacceptable. You and I have had this discussion before. Leaving will not bring an end to the war, it would only extend its scope. I'm not prepared to let the Decepticons have the whole planet as a stockpile for weapons to destroy us with somewhere else." "I won't argue this with you know. You know where I stand." "I appreciate that. But I think I may have an answer." Ratbat entered Megatron's main chamber with a touch of anxiety. Megatron's usual way of disposing of unwanted subordinates was to invite them here, just as he had been, and then tear them asunder. Ratbat was not relishing the thought of coming here, but defiance of Megatron also brought death. Slowly coming around the corner to the main audience area, he saw Megatron staring triumphantly out the transparent wall, at the ruins of a nearby Autobot encampment. Megatron noticed Ratbat's proximity almost immediately. "Come in, Ratbat. I wish to speak with you." "Y-yes, Lord Megatron." Ratbat's voice shook as he got closer to the larger Decepticon. "What is it you wish to speak of?" "First, calm yourself. I assure you that you will leave here unharmed." Ratbat's demeanor did not change. "I understand that you have been working with energy harnessing techniques." "That is true. My work involves harnessing submolecular particles from collapsed stars." "Black holes?" "Commonly, yes. The particles which escape the crushing effect of the hole are extraordinarily powerful, and are concentrated into a stream. Essentially, a pipeline of unimaginable power." "How can this `pipeline' be tapped?" "That is still in theory. If we assume our space to be near infinite, then there should be a near infinite number of these black holes, with another near infinite number of pipelines, which would intersect in a near infinite number of places. If this is true, then raw power is all around us, untapped. If a Cybertronian were to be surgically altered to be able to accept and collect this energy in its raw state, and channel it, then this being would be infinitely powerful." A wry smile crept onto Megatron's face. "When can you begin to operate on me?" Sentinel Prime walked to the communications console. "Static, open a planet wide channel to all Autobot cities." The comm chief made a few adjustments, then nodded. Sentinel Prime stiffened himself, then spoke. "Attention, my Autobots. This is Sentinel Prime. I am forced, due to the progress of the war, to issue the following command. Our cities can no longer be safely defended. I must now order all Autobots to abandon all cities and large encampments in favor of smaller, more mobile parties. I know that some of you may disagree with this tactic, but I believe that in staying in our cities, we are only giving the Decepticons targets to destroy. Hopefully, this step may drive the Decepticons away from large scale assaults and into smaller hunting parties, which will give us better odds against them. Primus help us, this terrible war will be over quickly, and we can return to our homes. Until all are one, fight on, my brave Autobots." Fortress Maximus stood behind Sentinel Prime wearing a scornful expression. "You're giving ground to the Decepticons? I can't believe it. They will surely see this as a sign of weakness." "Enough, Fortress Maximus. Maybe this is not what Prime Nova would have done, but he is gone now. I have made my decision." Fortress Maximus placed a hand on his leader's shoulder. "Prime, I mean no disrespect. I can't say that I agree with your decision, but I am still your friend. I'm only trying to help, as I can see how hard this is for you." "That is an understatement. I was not cut out for the role of warrior. Would that I could go back to studying the heavens, but It had other plans. Thank you, Fortress Maximus." Several days later, two very significant and radically different operations were to take place. Megatron's alteration began under the auspices of Ratbat as five Autobots: Scuff, Drag, Pitch, Ripper, and Grinder lay on specially prepared tables. Perceptor sat at the operations controls as Wheeljack checked the connections to the five Autobots. "If any of you wishes to pull out, this is the time to say something." Scuff, the largest and most vocal of the group spoke. "Shut up and get on with it, Wheeljack. We all want this over with as fast as possible." Drag grabbed Wheeljack's leg as he walked past. "Will it hurt?" "I honestly don't know." Five covers lowered over the tables as Perceptor monitored the restructurings which were taking place within the metal cocoons. Megatron rose from the operating platform and stretched. "Very good, Ratbat. I feel no after effect. Now, how do I access the energy." Ratbat moved out of Megatron's range. "My lord, there has, uh, been an unfortunate and unforeseen complication." Megatron's gaze turned sharp upon his subordinate. "I don't like the sound of that, Ratbat," he said as his he pointed his cannon at the Decepticon's head, "please explain yourself." "My lord, please, you will be able to access the energy..." "Yes?" "But you will not be able to use it directly." "I do not understand." "The energy is in such a form that it must be processed outside of your body, or else it will destroy you." "You have found a way to remedy the situation?" "Yes. I have constructed a cannon that you will be able to project the energy into. This, in turn, will effectively `distill' it into a form which can be projected." Megatron lowered his weapon. "Very well, Ratbat. You have served me well." "Thank you, Lord Megatron." Sentinel Prime walked pensively out from the confines of Iacon. Fortress Maximus had seen fit to have an area sectioned off by several soldiers, as the great experiment was to take place. "Wheeljack, you and Perceptor have had only had a few days on this. Are you sure that this is enough time for the... adjustment?" "We don't have much time. The process can be refined later, but we have to know if it's worthwhile at all" Perceptor stepped from Wheeljack's side. "I concur. Although preliminary results indicate that the possibility of success exists, the variables are far too high to assure successful completion without immediate testing." "All right, then. Let's get on with it." Wheeljack spoke then to the five Autobots who stood behind him. "Are you ready?" Scuff, Drag, Pitch, Ripper, and Grinder each indicated their readiness." "Go!" One by one, each of the Autobots began to shift, each transforming into a new form, then meeting at one location. After a short time, the five connected into one massive, although bulky Autobot. Wheeljack waited several moments until the frame of the Autobot solidified, then, barely masking his pride, spoke. "Prime, I'd like you to meet.. Archius!" As Wheeljack spoke, a massive Decepticon strike force opened fire on the assembled Autobots. Most of the posted soldiers fell instantly, but not for lack of courage. As the startled Autobots tried to run to the relative security of the city walls, Archius began to move. Slowly, he began to lift his arms, unsure of movement. As Decepticons flew near the composite Autobot, he grabbed one of them out of the sky and crushed it. Then, as his movements became steadier, he began to effectively swat the Decepticons from the air. One of the remaining security soldiers ran to Sentinel Prime's side, to defend his leader. As he did this, Megatron watched from a nearby tower. The Decepticon leader smirked as he saw the Autobot leader watch as his troops reentered the city. As Sentinel Prime then turned to leave the battlefield, Megatron grasped the firing controls of Ratbat's cannon. "Oh, no, Sentinel Prime, you're not going anywhere!" Sentinel Prime watched as the titan known as Archius disassembled and the component Autobots ran into the city. A bolt of energy bearing unimaginable power seared the air as it left Megatron's cannon, then struck the Autobot leader's side, then bore a hole into the ground. Sentinel Prime and the Soldier fell into the pit, and the pit was then covered by debris from the blast. Megatron roared with laughter. "Excellent, Ratbat, excellent work!" Several hours passed, but both Sentinel Prime and the Soldier did not know how many had gone by until the regained consciousness. Night had fallen above, and little light shone into the pit, giving only a pale light to the surroundings. The Soldier could see that the damage to his leader was severe, sparks flew constantly from his side. He moved forward, hesitatingly. "Prime, are you alright?" A weak voice eminated from Sentinel Prime. "No. I am not. I will die soon." The Soldier then sat back, not knowing what to say. Sentinel Prime turned his head and looked at him, "Who are you?" "I... I'm just a soldier." "No, I see it in you now. It sees who you are." "It?" The Soldier sat still, too confused to act. "My time is done. I have done the best that I could, but the task was more than I could handle. The hardest part still lies ahead..." Sentinel Prime's eyes began to glow as he gazed at the Soldier, " but I leave that to my successor...." The Soldier moved back, as if in fear, but the dying Autobot's arm was quick in a grasp, and held him tight. Sentinel Prime then looked up at the partially obstructed sky as his chest split open, revealing a small compartment, which in turn opened. Sentinel Prime's free hand then reached inside his chest, pulling out a small golden object which gave off a strange, shimmering blue light. Sentinel Prime's gaze then returned to the Soldier. "Don't be afraid... I know that you will do well..." A shot of pain racked Sentinel Prime's body. "I'll see you again..." Prime's body tensed, "Until all are one." With that, Sentinel Prime's body fell limp to the floor, and the Matrix dropped from the dead Autobot's hand and struck the ground. The Soldier looked at the flickering Matrix for several hours, both grief stricken over the loss of his leader, and paralyzed with fear over the prospect of leadership. He was simple, and had never aspired to any great stature. If the Autobots were to win the war, surely then the Matrix belonged to one of the other, better suited Autobots. Natural leaders, like Fortress Maximus or Countdown were far more deserving of the Matrix than he. He could not accept this mistake. The downfall of the Autobots would not be his cross to bear. With that thought, he left the Matrix where it lay, and began the climb up to the surface. His small frame faltered as he climbed, and he nearly fell several times. Reaching the surface, he brushed some of the debris away to see the Decepticon force, led by Megatron, had breached the walls of Iacon. Nothing could withstand the force of Megatron's cannon, as it pounded holes into the once secure walls of the city. He looked in horror as several Decepticons dragged wounded Autobots from the city and hung them, upside down, on the city's walls. As the wounded Autobots screamed in pain, their metal skin was peeled from their bodies as their tormentors laughed. His comrade-in-arms, Ultra Magnus, caught his eyes as he saw Scorponok begin to strip him of his very flesh. The agony in Ultra Magnus's stare penetrated the very soul of the Soldier, and he knew what had to be done. He hurriedly climbed back down into the pit, falling several times in his haste. He jumped down the last several feet, until he hit the floor of the pit. The Matrix beckoned to him, and without further thought, he picked it up and inserted his fingers into the holes which fit them perfectly.... The Matrix split open, bathing him in energy. Power surged into his hands, through his arms, into his brain, rewriting, resculpting him. He grew in size, as well as wisdom. He saw all that had been, and frightening visions of what was yet to be... At the conclusion of this recreation, Sentinel Prime's voice boomed in his head, not weak, as it had been, but a powerful voice, filling every corner of his mind... "Arise, Optimus Prime." Ultra Magnus fought the pain, still pinned to the wall. Scorponok had stopped skinning his leg to move onto another Autobot. Megatron continued to fire into the city, his laughter surreal. The explosion came from behind Megatron, and he was the first to see it. Megatron looked at the source of the explosion to see the top of the pit from which he had consigned Sentinel Prime explode, and another being emerged. Exuding sheer power, the red being jumped from the pit to face Megatron. Fear, something utterly new to Megatron, began to creep into his mind. Optimus Prime ran toward the Decepticon leader and wrenched the cannon from his grip as he tried to fire. The backlash blew Megatron across the battlefield and into the base of the tower from which he had destroyed Sentinel Prime. Several Decepticons then swarmed to challenge the new Autobot. With a speed and power never before seen, the avenging warrior tore the Decepticons asunder. Ultra Magnus was the first Autobot to see the new leader as he made his way to his captor. Scorponok stood, not sure whether to fight or escape. Choosing the former, the Decepticon ran at the new Prime, placing a pincer onto his head, With a single blow, Optimus Prime brought Scorponok to his knees, another drove him face down onto the ground. Optimus Prime placed his foot onto the back of the Decepticon's head. Scorponok wailed, "Spare me! You have beaten me!" Prime's foot put more pressure onto Scorponok's head as he spoke, "Today you will know not only the new leader of the Autobots, but also mercy. Tell your Decepticon filth that Optimus Prime has come." Prime's foot eased on the Decepticon, and with only a glance at him, Scorponok ran off. Optimus Prime then walked to the Autobots pinned on the wall. Several of them had already died, but Ultra Magnus was yet alive. Optimus Prime pulled out the pin which had been thrust through the Autobot's leg, holding him to the wall. As Ultra Magnus began to fall, Prime knelt down and helped the Autobot to his feet. Ultra Magnus looked long into the eyes of Optimus Prime, then spoke, "W-who are you? I know you..." Optimus Prime then helped him into the city, replying only with, "A friend, Ultra Magnus. I'm a friend."
